Multi-panel assemblies utilising Large 'Dovetail' system

LARGE 'DOVETAIL' SYSTEM

SPECIFICATION 6063 T6

The 'Dovetail' system is based on one of the most efficient strengthening structures known to engineers, the I-beam. Designed for the very largest traffic signs, it's the biggest and strongest of our sections with z-values at least 10% greater than any other equivalent section on the market.

It's brilliant two part arrangement incorporates a main channel and supporting 'Mate', which interlock to create the interface between the sign panels. Together they combine to provide the ultimate modular, stacking sign system.

At every horizontal join in the sign structure, the 'Dovetail' System uses one 'Dovetail' channel and one 'Mate', compared with two complete channels of traditional design. The cost savings are considerable. And it doesn't stop there. Because there is effectively only one channel at the horizontal interface, there need only be one fixing clip too. So, at the intersection with a post support, where previously you needed two clips, you will now need only one.

This will save a staggering 30% on the number of clips required on a large direction sign. And installation time will also be slashed by about the same amount. Sign manufacturers and installers both stand to gain. With the Highway Authority getting value for money, the wider and higher the sign, the greater the savings.

Multi-panel assemblies utilising Large 'Dovetail' system

Check orientation of 'Dovetail' channel and 'Mate' to ensure they will connect together.

Align channel sections to edge of plate as shown

When building signs using this system, it is important that the first (bottom) sign of the stack should contain no 'Mate' extrusions.

Use'C-Clips' for added security on wide spans or large overhangs

General

The top and bottom extrusions on any assembly should be brought in from the horizontal edge of the plate by approximately 75mm, to keep the extrusions and fixings concealed from front view and to avoid possible interference with externally fitted post caps.

Joining 'Dovetail' extrusions

Two methods of joining the large 'Dovetail' extrusions are shown below. These techniques should never be used for joining offcuts to form the horizontal support, but should be employed for situations where the sign span exceeds the maximum available length of the extrusion.

The 'Dovetail' Jointing Strap is designed to be used where post centres are known and wherever possible should be planned to coincide with the post intersections. The 'Dovetail' Channel Coupling should be used for joins falling between post centres. Signs constructed in this way should have the joins staggered as shown in the diagram below.
